When Makino trading asked Studio17 to redesign their popular small-size body fat analyser, care was taken to preserve what is important to the consumer, and where the product could be improved.

The new product features a collection of relatively small changes that add up to a big step up in aesthetics and function.

Crucially, the product achieves a ‘sweet-spot’ of compact dimensions, advanced fat analysing technology and a large screen, wrapped up in a slender body. Oversize fat analysing electrodes and screen make the overall product appear smaller. All elements are flush to the upper surface, creating a cohesive overall form, but also a comfortable surface to stand on.

The all-plastic body makes strategic use of internal ribbing to provide support when being used.

The top face presents as a subtly pillowed surface. This serves to balance the industrial looking high gloss ABS plastic and flush fitting steel electrodes. The curvature of the steel electrodes reveals the light transitions in the metallic finish, juxtapose the more defined reflective plastic body.

The lower moulding is finished in a contrasting matt texture, with a narrow belt-line and tapered underside reducing the visual weight of the product, whilst feeling thinner in the hand.

A large screen and generously spaced touch controls means the product never feels compromised by its compact dimensions. Available in 5 colours, the scales were released in 2012 throughout Japan.
